Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)
The Mendip Hills, criss-crossed by dry-stone walls and rich in archaeological remains, rise to a high plateau around Charterhouse. There are two National Nature Reserves and many Sites of Special Scientific Interest - including limestone pastures, ancient woodland and the cliffs of Cheddar Gorge with their rare flora and peregrine falcons.
In 1972 the Mendip Hills were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) covering 198 square kilometres. The extraordinary character of the AONB is due to the karst geology and the activities of past and present communities such as mining, quarrying, farming and forestry.
The area's reputation for outdoor pursuits is growing fast, yet people also visit for the quiet enjoyment of the scenery and diversity of wildlife, which provides seasonal themes for many walks and rambles.
With special protection and management, Mendip is a treasured place where visitors are able to enjoy the open beauty of this wonderful corner of Somerset.
