Nature Reserve
At the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the Centre is surrounded by nature reserves - all with Site of Special Scientific Interest and Scheduled Monument status.
You can explore the Charterhouse Roman and Victorian history on your visit to the Centre's 70 acre Nature Reserve at Blackmoor. It is an old lead mining area with plenty of visible archaeology. Now rough grassland, heath, wetland and woodland have reclaimed the area.
Despite the industrial legacy the reserve is rich in wildlife. The ponds harbour amphibians such as newts and toads. Snipe and Teal winter here hiding in the reeds around the margins. Owls and bats are nocturnal visitors and roe deer and badgers are often seen passing at dawn and dusk.
This beautiful protected landscape provides a wilderness experience that can transform and inspire people in their studies, work and leisure.
