History
Since 1966 Charterhouse has introduced people of all ages and abilities to this fascinating area through adventurous and enjoyable outdoor activities.
Situated in a Victorian school, Charterhouse lies within a dramatic landscape that is internationally important for its history and archaeology.
Lead and silver was mined at Charterhouse from Roman times (and before) until the 1880's. Most of the surrounding antiquities are Victorian, but they overlie visible evidence from many centuries of human activity. You just need to know where to look.
Charterhouse ceased to be a school in 1946. Thereafter visiting groups came to Mendip to explore the area - initially they bunked down in the hall with the best place being next to the wood-burning stove. In 2004, a secure and comfortable accommodation block - built to state-of-the-art environmental specifications - replaced a cluster of mid-sixties outdoor cabins.
