High up on the Mendip plateau water is a scarce resource.
Although our annual rainfall is high the water quickly disappears, percolating through the limestone bedrock. Therefore the plateau is quite wild with few farms and settlements, and water on Mendip has to be pumped and sewerage has to be transported away.
We encourage groups to be water wise when at Charterhouse.
