Geology

Discover the fascinating geology of the Mendips

Mendip is massive for limestone geology. Essentially it is a denuded anticline with Old Red Sandstone exposed by the weathering of limestone on Black Down. The thick limestone beds are evident across Mendip and the karst scenery is best seen on the scarp slopes, the wooded vales and bottoms and in the impressive limestone gorges.

The centre offers several opportunities to explore the area's geology:

  • Geology Rocks! Hands on exploration and caving.
  • Rock hounding. A guided walk looking at the common rocks crystals and fossils found on Mendip.
  • Lodes of Lead. A short ramble around Charterhouse investigating the mineral wealth of the area and the lead mining history since roman times.
