Archeaology
The Charterhouse locality is one of the key areas of archaeological interest in Somerset with an international reputation. Mendip's unique geology has attracted many communities to settle here over the past 6,000 years.
These settlements developed to exploit the substantial mineral deposits nearby. The first people to come for this purpose were the Romans in 46AD, followed by the Carthusians and more recently, the Victorians. They were mainly searching to mine the Galena (Lead Ore) that was found in abundance around Charterhouse, but also for silver and cadmium.
There are many signs of these occupations still in evidence, from ancient settlements and amphitheatres, through to the sites of the old mines.
