Caving
Caving is a frontier for adventure and Mendip limestone has some of the best, longest and most recently discovered cave systems in southern Britain. Goatchurch is for the novice caver, there is the nationally known Swildon's and in the Centre grounds are Waterwheel and Upper Flood, strictly for the experienced and courageous to which access is restricted to a few persons a year. Truly it is caving for all abilities and Charterhouse has been at the heart of it for forty years.
Explore the stalactites, the stalagmites, the pillars and other natural rock sculptures; the streamways down which ancient waters flowed - but are now dry and crawlable and lead to vast caverns underground. A world of wonder.
Our instructors deliver a wide range of courses for aspirant cavers wishing to explore the nether world of Mendip to cave leaders requiring qualification in supervising groups underground.
Caving provides a challenging activity that is great fun to do with friends or colleagues and it is a worthwhile and rewarding past time in its own right.
The geology of Mendip is fascinating and caving is no doubt the best way to explore this subject in depth.
Our courses in caving are able to cover:
- Introduction to caving for complete newcomers
- Cave leader training (Local Cave Leader Level One)
- Guiding
- Geology
